Markus Westermeier completed his doctorate at the Institute of Machine Tools and Industrial Management (iwb) at Technical University of Munich (TUM) in 2016, where he headed the department of Cutting Machine Tools. Adrian Lewis completed his PhD in experimental particle physics at the University of Oxford in 2014. The focus of his work was to evaluate the large amount of data recorded at the ATLAS detector (LHC, CERN) to make a precise measurement of the probability of production (effective cross section) of W\/Z bosons in proton-proton collisions. After his PhD, he worked as a software engineer at Brainlab and Cognostics. Since founding Spanflug, he has been responsible for software architecture, web development, and dev-ops. What interests him about Spanflug is the interface between mechanical engineering and computer science. Lucas Giering studied mechanical engineering at the Technical University of Munich and gained professional experience at iwb, VARTA and Siemens. As part of his master’s thesis, he was already involved in the development of Spanflug during the start-up phase. Since then, he has taken on central roles in the company: he led the interdisciplinary product team, was responsible for market and customer analyses, established agile development processes and looked after enterprise customers. Thanks to his extensive experience, he knows the requirements of all stakeholders in the Spanflug platform. Spanflug is a technology company that was founded as a spin-off from the Institute for Machine Tools and Industrial Management (iwb) at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) in 2018. Markus Westermeier had the original idea for Spanflug while working as the managing director of an CNC contract manufacturer. After just nine months of development, the founding team \u2013 supported by the start-up network at UnternehmerTUM \u2013 launched our digital platform to the market.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Our procurement solution for turning and milling parts was launched at the end of 2018. The quoting software for CNC machine shops followed a year later. Since then, the Spanflug platform has been on a growth trajectory with currently more than 5,000 customers and a network of over 6,000 machines. Our intelligent algorithms and leading technology for part analysis also make us a competence and development partner for renowned research projects, such as the remanufacturing and sustainability project EREP or CICAM, the joint project for self-learning optimization in the hybrid machining of workpieces.<\/p>\n

The German Machine Tool Builders Association (VDW) became a shareholder in Spanflug in 2020, and CERATIZIT S.A. in 2024.
